When is it time to go to the dentist?

April 15, 2010 |17:07 | Dental Care  By : Team X

When do we begin teaching dental health to our children? Abraham J. Kadish, DMD, affiliated with Chilton Hospital with an office in Butler, offers helpful hints for infants to pre-teens to encourage good dental care.

Q. When should parents begin brushing their children's teeth? A. Teeth should be brushed as soon as the teeth come in with a cloth or gauze pad. Q. When should a little one first go to the dentist? A. Children should first go to the dentist between the ages of 2 and 4. If anything looks problematic, they should go as soon as a problem is noticed.

Q. How should you brush an infant's or young child's teeth? A. Teeth should be brushed with a gauze pad when they first appear. As the children get older introduce a small, soft-bristled toothbrush with a tiny bit of fluoride toothpaste. Q. What's the best way to talk to kids about eating too much sugar?

A. This starts in the home with a diet that is high in fresh fruits and vegetables, and low in candies, processed foods and other refined sweets. Treats that are high in sugar are just that: an occasional treat. Processed foods should be avoided because they are often high in sugars and starch. Starch turns to sugar in your system, so although some foods may not appear to be a sugary, they are.

If you have a pool in your home, then it should be a place of enjoyment and relaxation. However, the pool can be a danger zone and can turn an enjoyable moment into a nightmare. Swimming pool safety is important to have a pleasurable time in your pool. It is a responsible step that you make sure your pool is used safely and that there are no hazards that could cause injury or death.

Children age four and under have a higher risk of drowning compared to any other age group. Every year, about 300 children in this age bracket drown in swimming pools at home. Even kids age 14 and under can be victims of unsecured pools at home. In 2002, almost 2,700 kids experienced drowning related incidents. To prevent this incident from happening in your own pool, you need to consider pool safety procedures to ensure that your swimming pool does not present any danger.

Experts: Teach dental hygiene at an early age

October 29, 2009 |13:55 | Dental Care  By : Team X

Experts said Tuesday that parents could teach their children to clean their mouths and teeth even before they start teething.  Armasastra Bahar, a dental expert, said most children in Indonesia began to brush their teeth when they were 6 years old. "They should be taught to brush their teeth earlier," he said. "Parents can begin teaching them the importance of brushing teeth by cleaning their baby's gums with soft wet washcloths after feeding them. This makes them comfortable and familiar with having clean mouths," said Armasastra in a talk show on the importance of toothbrushing. When babies begin to grow teeth, parents can brush them with fingers or baby toothbrushes, he added. "Growing up, they will get used to having clean teeth and mouths. They will likely build toothbrushing habits," Armasastra said.

Dental care for kids

September 3, 2009 |13:03 | Dental Care  By : Team X

Teaching your child proper dental care at an early age will lead to a healthier mouth as an adult. Like adults, children should see their dentist at least every six months. Your dentist may want to schedule a visit every three months to help train brushing and flossing habits, build a comfort level with your child, or to treat a developing problem. The best way for a child to learn to care for their teeth is by following your example. Let your child watch you brush, floss, and rinse, in order to help teach technique and convey the importance or oral hygiene. By age five your child should be able to brush his or her teeth with some supervision to ensure that all the plaque is being removed. Ask your dentist about how much toothpaste your child should use. Normally a pea-sized dab of fluoride toothpaste is sufficient. Teach your child not to swallow the toothpaste. While many children's toothpastes are flavored in order to promote healthy habits, swallowing toothpaste on a continual basis is not good for your child's general health. In addition to learning proper dental habits, nutrition plays an important role in your child's health. If your child snacks between meals, allow nutritious foods such as cheese, fruits, and raw vegetables, as these foods promote the least buildup of plaque.

Media sources revealed that Jon Gosselin was photographed taking the sextuplets for a dental checkup near their home in Reading, Pennsylvania.

Since it's almost time for the Gosselin offspring and other kids across the country to head back to school, it’s a great idea to schedule a dental checkup before the big rush at the end of August.

The Centers for Disease Control and Surgeon General advise that children receive a dental checkup prior to the start of the school year.

Tooth decay is still prevalent among young children and it's been reported that 78 percent of American 17-year-olds have already had one filling.
