Study considers mining impact on child health

Researchers from Edith Cowan University are looking into children's exposure to dust and metals in Port and South Hedland. They are trying to recruit 100 children aged nine to 12 to take part in the study.

Participants are asked to wear a small pump in a backpack which will measure dust and provide urine and hair samples. Dr Andrea Hinwood says the study will uncover how much iron ore dust people are exposed to and how it may impact their health.  "What we are trying to see is that if you live in a dusty environment does that actually mean you are exposed to the dust or is it only where you are in an industrial location?" she said.
